" The Burmese Government should release all prisoners from jail to clear the way for national reconciliation " said Mr. Kasit, Foreign of Thailand , 22 May , Bangkok Post . One wonders what has happened to the spirit of the ASEAN Character viz respect for sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs?
It is disappointing to read remarks made out of context and basing on in correct facts such as those made by the Thai Foreign Minister Mr. Kasit who said in the Bangkok Post of 22nd May, 2009 that "the Burmese Government should release all political prisoners from jail" Does one have the right to interfere in the internal affairs of another fellow ASEAN member state when something contrary is mentioned in the ASEAN Charter?
It is comforting to read in the Bangkok Post of May 22, 2009 that Thai Foreign Minister Mr. Kasit" praised the Burmese Government for allowing the diplomats to meet Miss Su Kyi." However, the continuation "but said the positive sign should not end there. The Burmese Government should release all political prisoners from jail to clear the way for national reconciliation" fail to pass the criterion of the ASEAN Character principles of respect for sovereignty, independence and national identity, amounting to interference in the internal affairs of a fellow Member State. It is indeed sad coming from the Foreign Minister of a member state that holds the ASEAN Chair.
